Megan here --
As a professional "look good < > feel good" evangelist, I love reading about all the stuff people do to set themselves up for the day before getting dressed.
Do you do a shot of olive oil? Hop up and down for five minutes? Run through your daily to-do's while lying on a PEMF mat like a hot dog on a gas station grill?
I love it. All of it.
My own morning routine is cobbled together from too many sources to remember at this point.
It will also inevitably change, but here's how my days start right now.
Read on if you're curious. Then, I want to hear about your morning routine! Maybe I'll borrow from it and add to my own lineup.
Write down nonsense
Iâve been on The Artistâs Way bandwagon of writing three pages each morning for a few years now. Itâs easily the thing that most anchors my days. I love barfing out thoughts and to do lists and nagging grievances onto the blank page.
Maybe I do something with them. Maybe I donât.
What matters is I get them out of my head. I like to think of it like Dumbledore pulling thoughts out of his mind with his wands into that birdbath-looking thing in his office (itâs been a long time since I read the books but iykyk).
Support the gut
Last year, my animal communicator informed me that everyone in our household - not just the dog - needed to start taking a probiotic. She was the first person to tell me I was pregnant (like, before I took a test), so I tend to defer to her on, well, all things.
She recommended this one, and I laughed when recently I found out my auntâs actual doctor recommended the same one.
+1 for the dog psychic!
Get dressed
In the mornings, I pull on what I call a âmediumâ outfit.
It means Iâm dressed, and wonât be embarrassed if the neighbors see me taking the dog out, but itâs also not what Iâll be wearing later in the day - whether I have meetings out of the house or even just on Zoom.
Right now, Iâm living in this sweatsuit (menâs sizes here). I heard leggings aren't cool anymore for women, and I donât know if thatâs true, but I do love the soft feel of a not too baggy not too tight sweatsuit.
Caffeinate
I donât regularly drink coffee anymore, and I work hard every day not to make that fact my entire personality.
If Iâm fueling up at home, I pop a matcha latte pod into the single-serve brewer and add some almond milk - I pour mine directly into the cup but have my eye on this frother (lol I just ran that sentence back in my head and whew does it sound obnoxious. oh well).
I donât ascribe to the âmillennials canât afford houses because theyâre buying too much avocado toast,â but I do feel a nagging guilt at spending $7-10 on a latte. Sometimes, though, you just need to get out of the house so have to tell yourself that the world is burning and who needs a retirement fund, anyway?
Iâm still a Starbucks girlie despite everything theyâre doing to seemingly try to convince me that theyâre only for Gen Zers now. But I made a 6-7 joke yesterday so I think I can pass?!
What my routine doesnât currently include? Any real form of exercise, or meditation.
Here's what I do that counts...or so I tell myself. I brush my teeth with my left hand (I'm right-handed), which I've read is good for kickstarting your mind-body connection. And I pull a card from this affirmations deck.
I have grand plans to re-incorporate these practicesâŚsoon. In the meantime, Iâm giving myself some grace that knowing I want physical movement and a contemplative moment to be a part of my day is enough.
Now, I want to hear from you.
Tell me: Whatâs your morning routine?
If it helps set you up for a good day, then hit REPLY and let me know.
Iâm all for habit stacking a good old fashioned life hack. So if I like it, maybe Iâll steal it :)
