An English muffin-induced identity crisis

Megan here --

I accidentally sparked concern with a friend recently when I asked if she, too, ever gets totally overwhelmed with a sense of existential dread out of nowhere?

Sometimes, I told her, I'll be toasting an English muffin and think, Oh, we're almost out of English muffins. I need to buy more at the store.

Totally normal, right?

But then I think about how, after I bring home them home, we'll just eat those, necessitating another trip to the store to buy yet more English muffins.

And how I'll just keep doing that....until I die?!?!

Anyway, she said no. She doesn't think about that.

Maybe I need to up my Lexapro because this foreboding sense of time 👏 marching 👏 on 👏 has only gotten stronger since having a baby.

Because everything we do, that's our legacy.

So each time I approve an invoice, or upload a pin to Pinterest, I clock it as precious minutes not spent teaching her how to fight the patriarchy. Or, y'know, going on a walk to the park.

The conversation reinforced something important:

Style Girlfriend's scope should be narrow enough that the only thing* causing me to spiral is my grocery list.

*and laundry...so much laundry-triggered ennui

Sure, any men's lifestyle publication can put together a roundup of the most stylish linen suits for summer or the best workout shorts that don't chafe.

Men's Health can do that. GQ can do that.

What they can't do is tell you what women actually think. That's the lane Style Girlfriend has spent years carving out.

We're fortunate to have built an audience of men who trust our all-female team to share what women wish more men knew.

About style, yes, but also about dating and relationships and the weird social rules nobody tells you. About whether women care if you take a GLP-1 (we don't). Or if that camp shirt looks cooler worn open over a ribbed tank (it does).

Which is why the goal at Style Girlfriend is to focus like a laser on sharing that female perspective.

Here’s a few of my recent favorites that feel particularly SG-y:

Obviously it's still a big tent here at SG HQ because us ladies do have opinions on the best linen suits (it's this one) and workout shorts (these).

But the internet does not need another men's publication just telling guys what to wear.

It does need more places where men can get thoughtful, honest insight into how they're perceived by the women they're hoping to connect with.

What do you want to see more from SG this summer? Hit REPLY and let me know.

PS A lot of these hot takes are hitting social these days, so if you’re not following SG on Instagram, now’s the time to link up there.

I don't know about you, but the roller coaster “chug chug chug” ascent towards September always fills me with anticipation. I’m transported back to the Supermarket Sweep–esque shopping trip for new notebooks and new shoes, and with them, the delusional belief that this is the year dopey-but-dreamy jock Gerard notices me if I just douse myself in enough Gap Om fragrance (which is back, by the way!). That back-to-school energy is worth stealing, even as adults. After all, who couldn’t use a...

Last night I dreamt that I wasn’t invited to Taylor Swift’s wedding. Now, in real life, I also wasn’t invited to Taylor Swift’s wedding. But Dream Megan was deeply offended by this. Fine, I thought. Maybe not the ceremony. But I should at least be someone's +1 at the after-party? When I woke up, I laughed at how ridiculous it all was. But you know how sometimes a dream hangs around for awhile? Like when you’re annoyed at your spouse because Dream Them flirted with someone else? This was kind...

📽️ Watch the latest episode of Reset Mode! Megan here -- This weekend is Pride in New York City, making it as good a time as any to say: the icon Meg Stalter I joke that Style Girlfriend's elevator pitch is, "We're like a small GQ, if GQ was run entirely by women.” Here's what that means in practice: Our all-female editorial team shares trusted men's lifestyle advice and product recommendations with an audience of guys (like you!) who care what women think. The result: The Style Girlfriend...
